In-chair Vs. Take Home Teeth Whitening - Which is Best for You?

woman showing smile on dental chairWhen it comes to teeth whitening, there are two primary options available to patients: in-chair whitening and take-home kits. Both options are popular and effective, but they have distinct differences that patients should be aware of. Here are the key differences between both.

In-chair whitening

In-chair whitening, also known as chairside whitening, is performed in the practice by our dental hygienists. The process involves applying a bleaching gel to the teeth and using a special light to activate the gel and accelerate the whitening process. In-chair whitening sessions usually last about an hour, and patients can see results immediately after the treatment.

Take-home whitening

Take-home whitening involves the use of custom-made trays and bleaching gel that patients use at home. The trays are typically worn for a few hours each day or overnight, depending on the strength of the bleaching gel and the desired results. Take-home kits can take longer than in-chair visits to achieve the desired results, usually between 1-2 weeks.

T&C’s:
Not everyone is a candidate for whitening.
Checkup and clean recommended for optimal results.

Other differences include:

Speed: In-chair sessions are a much faster option than take-home kits. Patients can see results immediately after the in-chair treatment, whereas take-home whitening requires multiple applications over several days or weeks.

Convenience: Take-home whitening is a more convenient option for patients who don’t have the time or desire to sit in a dental chair for an hour. With take-home whitening, patients can whiten their teeth at their own pace and in the comfort of their own homes.

Sensitivity: In-chair whitening may cause more sensitivity than take-home whitening due to the higher concentration of bleaching gel used during the treatment. Patients who have sensitive teeth may prefer take-home options, which allows for a slower, more gradual whitening process.
